Dress Code

​Sunnyside High School Dress Code 2014-2015 (Available in Spanish or Hmong upon request) 

The following dress code applies to both sexes and will be enforced at school and all school activities: Any apparel, hairstyle, cosmetic or jewelry, even if not specifically mentioned below, which creates a safety concern, draws undue attention to the wearer, or which tends to detract from the educational process is not acceptable. 

1. Every high school student must have in their possession a valid student I.D. card. 

2. No baggy, sagging, or oversized clothing permitted. Pants/shorts must fit around the waist. 

3. Clothing with lettering or drawings which depict sexually suggestive expressions or actions, profanity, obscenity, drugs, alcohol, or tobacco, or which degrade the integrity of individual groups may not be worn. 

4. Clothing with logos/mascots of professional sports is prohibited, (i.e. Raiders, 49ers, Oakland A’s, Dodgers). 

5. Any clothing depicting bulldogs such as Fresno State Bulldogs and Georgetown Hoyas are not acceptable. 

6. Torn or radically altered clothing is not allowed. 

7. See-through or sexually suggestive apparel, which exposes the body in a sexually suggestive manner, is not acceptable. No undergarments may be revealed. Straps on blouses or tops are to be at least two (2) inches wide. 

8. Underwear-type sleeveless shirts, tank tops, tube tops or halter-tops are not allowed. Tops must completely cover the midriff area. 

9. Dresses, skirts, and shorts must NOT be more than 4 inches above the knee. 

10. No pajamas or slippers. 

11. Gang-related symbols or insignias or “colors” (red--when it is the predominant color of an article of clothing) are not to be worn or displayed. Red under-garments, T-shirts, belts, and shoes may not be worn to school or school sponsored events. 

12. Bandannas of any color are not allowed. 

13. Attire, which may be used as a weapon, may not be worn (i.e. steel-toed boots, chains, items with spikes or studs). 

14. Hats/hoods/headgear are allowed to be worn on campus ONLY if they are Sunnyside hats. 

15. Haircuts or hairstyles that draw undue attention to the wearer are not permitted. 

16. No flip flop sandals are allowed. All shoes must have a back strap. 

17. Pierced attire limited to ears only. Eyebrow, lip, nose, or cheek piercings are not allowed to be worn at school. 

18. Sunglasses are to be worn outside. 

19. Electronic devices (cell phones, IPOD’s, MP3’s, Playstations, etc.) are allowed before school, during lunch, and after school but must remain off while in the classroom. Electronic devices are NOT allowed to be used in the classroom or on campus during class time. 

20. The possession of skateboards/skates/rollerblades/scooters and their use are prohibited on the school grounds. 

21. Permanent paint markers or graffiti tools (sharpies, sandpaper, etching tools, etc.) are not allowed on campus. Markers with felt tips 3/8” or larger are not allowed on campus. 

22. Graffiti or graffiti type writing will not be allowed on campus. Students may not display graffiti writing on binders, school work, backpack, or bags used at school. Items with graffiti are subject to confiscation by administration. 

ENFORCEMENT: Enforcement is the responsibility of ALL the staff. Referrals will be made to the vice principals for appropriate action. A student in violation of this policy is deemed in willful defiance of the valid authority of the school Principal. Accordingly, violations of this policy will result in disciplinary actions such as detention and/or suspension.

STEP 3: Student is formally suspended from school 

Note: Due to the frequency of changing styles in clothing, Sunnyside High School reserves the right to adjust the dress code as needed. The dress code will be reviewed periodically by staff, parents, students and the School Site Council. Questions regarding the dress code due to medical or religious reasons should be directed to the vice principals. Exceptions to the above may be made by the Principal for special days or special events.
