Robert G. Nelson Appointed to Superintendent

9/14/2017

Wednesday, September 13, 2017, the Fresno Unified Board of Education announced the district's new leader, unanimously appointing Robert G. Nelson as superintendent and approving his employment contract.  Known to his colleagues as Bob, Superintendent Nelson has been serving as interim superintendent since February while the district launched a nationwide search.  Superintendent Nelson is the district's first internal employee to be named to this role in nearly 30 years.

Superintendent Nelson started his career with Fresno Unified 26 years ago as a teacher at Burroughs Elementary School.  From there he went on to Anthony Elementary School and later served as an administrator at Addams, Powers Ginsburg and Thomas elementary schools. He also served as human resource administrator before leaving Fresno Unified in 2012 to become the superintendent at Chawanakee Unified School District in Madera County. Nelson returned to Fresno Unified in 2015 to serve as chief of staff.

Outside of being an educator, Superintendent Nelson's favorite titles are that of husband and father. He and his wife, Tiffany, have seven children ranging in ages from 23 months to 21 years old. Superintendent Nelson and his wife have served as foster parents for a number of years, resulting in the adoption of four of their seven children.

Superintendent Nelson earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Southern California, his teaching credential from Fresno State and is currently completing his doctoral degree through USC.

In the coming weeks, Superintendent Nelson will meet with the Board of Education to discuss and outline his goals for the district.
