Hoover Academic Building Named for Longtime Trustee Janet Ryan

12/13/2016

Fresno Unified officials and community members gathered on Dec. 12, 2016 to rename the Hoover Academic Building after Janet Ryan, a longtime Board of Education trustee and Hoover region community member. The Board of Education voted at its October 26, 2016 meeting to rename the building the “Janet Martino Ryan Academic Building.”

Dec. 14, 2016 marks the end of Janet Ryan’s 12-year tenure as a Fresno Unified Board of Education trustee. During that time, she has played a critical role in moving the district forward on a number of fronts, including Fresno Unified’s record graduation rates and significant investments in school facilities, such as the new academic building opened at Hoover in 2013 and the Hoover Aquatic Complex that opened in 2015.

Prior to being elected in 2004, Janet Ryan served her community in a variety of ways, including various boards and commissions. Her resume of public service includes participation in the League of Women Voters, Fresno Fire Chief’s Citizens’ Advisory Board and City of Fresno Public Safety Commission and two years as president of Citizens for Integrity in Government. She also served on the Fresno City College Students in Free Enterprise Advisory Board and the Rose Ann Vuich Ethical Leadership Award selection committee, and was a founding member of the Fresno Citizens for Good Government.

“Trustee Ryan’s extensive experience in public service helped lead Fresno Unified out of tumultuous times and has now left the district in excellent shape – both fiscally and academically,” Superintendent Michael Hanson said. “Renaming the academic building for Trustee Ryan memorializes her outstanding efforts as a Board of Education member, but, more importantly, as an excellent community member.”
